Decorating a home can be a difficult task, and sometimes it’s hard to know where to start. Check out my interior design tips below to make your home feel welcoming, bigger, and brighter – without breaking the bank!
Scale It Down
Interior design is all about proportions! A smaller room will require smaller furniture to create a greater sense of space. It’s a fine balance between having enough comfortable sitting room and enough space for clear open walkways. I recommend keeping it simple – pick a few favorite pieces and have them be the main focus of the room. Limit excess furniture and belongings that can make your home feel cluttered.
Let There Be Light
Every room should be well-lit, from either natural or artificial light. Remove heavy drapes and cut back any shrubbery that may be blocking sunlight from the outside. Add more lamps or ceiling fixtures if natural light isn’t possible – the brighter your space, the larger it will seem! Consider using breezy lightweight fabrics for window treatments, which let the sun shine through while maintaining your privacy.

Be Smart With Your Storage
Dual function pieces like storage ottomans and benches are excellent for hiding clutter and opening up space in smaller rooms. Store personal items like extra blankets, pillows, books, and games inside to keep tables and sofas clear. You may even want to use an ottoman as a coffee table by placing a large decorative serving tray on top, perfect for drinks and light snacks!
Position Mirrors Strategically
Mirrors are a great way to create a sense of openness and reflect more light in your home. Place mirrors across from windows or near light fixtures to brighten up darker spaces. Consider using large floor mirrors or assembling a mirror gallery wall to create the appearance of depth in smaller rooms.
Pro Tip: Placing a mirror at the end of a hallway can make the corridor seem longer!

If your pressed for space, floor-to-ceiling bookcases can help to organize your belongings and reduce clutter. Not only do they draw the eye upward to increase the vertical space of the room, they can add color and character. However, you don’t want to overpack the shelves. Make sure to leave some empty space to avoid a cluttered look, and consider filling decorative baskets with smaller or oddly shaped items.
